The dark tenor BillyAndrews in the Wuppertal town hall

Singing in a choir became monotonous for me. At some point I also noticed that the same people always come to the opera. When I saw that the best panacea for operas and theaters seemed to be to send naked people on stage in order to lure people into a crazy production, I thought that there had to be a different way. So it came about combining classical music with rock. This is how the idea for the character Dark Tenor came about. I was always in costume for opera performances and I adopted that for my individual project. It should be opulent and so, inspired by the series ‘Game of Thrones’, I came up with the dark tenor, the mask, the outfit, everything around it with bearskin and mysticism. During the pandemic, I decided to drop the mask. That was a good fit, as my project The Dark Tenor had reached the point where I wanted to take off the mask and have officially been traveling as Billy Andrews ever since.
